France Orders AT4s from Saab

Swedish defense company Saab have received an order for their AT4 anti-armour weapon from the French Armament General Directorate (DGA). The order was made in mid-December 2022, and according to Saab is valued at approximately EUR 24 million ($26 million).

Deliveries on the order will take place in 2023. The AT4 family is a range of lightweight, man-portable, disposable weapons which Saab describe as “characterised by ease of use”. The AT4 can be used against tanks and other armored fighting vehicles as well as threats inside buildings and field fortifications. It can be used as a defensive weapon to protect fixed installations, supply points and other vital assets from armored threats.

Görgen Johansson, the head of Saab’s business area Dynamics, said:

“We are proud to yet again be chosen to deliver our world class single-shot AT4 system to France. Our future ready AT4 will ensure the French armed forces have the necessary firepower to give them the advantage on the battlefield,”

France has previously ordered Saab’s AT4CS ER (Extended Range), the AT4CS HE (High Explosive) and the AT4CS AST (Anti-Structure). The AT4 family is known as the Roquette NG (Nouvelle Génération) in French service.

The procurement of Roquette NG is part of a multistage agreement comprising one fixed element and eight consecutive options from 2015 to 2024. This deal was agreed back in 2014. The Roquette NG family are replacing the replace the MBDA Eryx wire-guided anti-tank missile.

In addition to the further procurement of the AT4, France’s Directorate General of Armaments also announced earlier in January that a further order for 200 Akeron MP medium-range anti-tank guided missiles from MBDA would be made. Akeron is replacing Javelin and MILAN in French service.
