DSEI 2025: FFG Debut the New Condor Air Defense Vehicle

DSEI 2025 featured a lot of debuts but one of the most striking was FFG’s new Condor. Unveiled in a striking blue paint scheme, at a glance the Condor was reminiscent of something from video games like World of Tanks or Fortnite. The new vehicle features the Turra 30-SA, a newly-developed unmanned turret from Slovakian manufacturer EVPÚ.

Speaking to a EVPÚ representative OVD learnt that the Turra 30-SA’s unmanned turret is capable of an elevation of up to 70-degrees. The example on display mounted a 30mm MK44 Bushmaster medium caliber auto cannon, however, other cannons can also be mounted in the turret, with guns of up to 40mm possible. The auto cannon is fed via dual feed system, enabling two different types of ammunition to be carried.

As a ground-based air defense asset tasked with the very short range air defense role the Condor’s Turra 30-SA turret will also be equipped with EVPÚ’s Harpia active protection system. EVPÚ describe Harpia:

“APS HARPIA detects threats by fusing data from microwave and electro-optical sensors. Based on this data, the system automatically assesses the threat, engages the target, and initiates countermeasures that neutralize the threat by either destroying it, deflecting it from its flight path, or disrupting its flight stability through the effects of an explosion.”

Condor is based upon the hull of Leopard 1, which FFG describe as ‘readily available’. Given the Leopard 1’s well-known protection shortcomings the Condor is equipped with additional side and roof armour. The vehicle is 7.2m long, 3.4m wide, and 3m high, with a combat weight of less than 40 tonnes. The Leopard 1’s drive train will be replaced by a new power-pack from FFG developed for Leopard 1-based vehicles. The new power-pack is powered by an 8V199TE23 eight-cylinder diesel Rolls-Royce engine with an output of up to 1,080hp.

While the FFG Condor’s head-turning blue paint scheme won’t be the norm in the field the new vehicle is likely to be an appealing option to operators of Leopard 1 who are seeking a new highly mobile ground based air defense platform.
