Rheinmetall and Indra Partner to Upgrade Spanish Armored Vehicles
Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH (part of Rheinmetall AG) and Indra formalized their cooperation last month with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Madrid’s FEINDEF defense expo. The Rheinmetall-Indra MoU commits both companies to collaborate closely on armoured vehicle projects for the Spanish Armed Forces. This agreement builds on an existing partnership that came just after Indra and Rheinmetall Electronics announced a related deal to modernize the Leopard 2E tank’s combat system.
The two companies will jointly propose an upgrade to the Leopard 2E combat system, which will integrate state-of-the-art technologies compatible with future C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence) platforms. The companies originally co-developed the Leopard 2E’s combat system (both the fire-control system and the C4I system) in Spain, giving them unique insight into its modernization needs. The plan is to leverage this expertise so that any Spanish Leopard 2E enhancements will align with NATO standards and allow easy technology sharing across other Leopard 2 variants.

The plan is to leverage this expertise so that any Spanish Leopard 2E enhancements will align with NATO standards and allow easy technology sharing across other Leopard 2 variants.

Both firms bring deep technical strengths to the table. Indra is Spain’s top defense-systems integrator, responsible for designing the Leopard 2E’s thermal imaging cameras and locally manufacturing its combat system under license from Rheinmetall Electronics. Indra also provides the “Lince” battle management system used in Spanish Leopards and developed the Maestre mission system for Spain’s new Dragón 8×8 IFV. Rheinmetall is a global leader in military vehicles and electronics, which is known for designing systems like the KEILER NG breacher and contributing key technologies to the Leopard 2A4. Together, the companies aim to integrate next-generation digital systems, like automated fire-control, advanced sensors, networked communications, and future unmanned teaming, into Spanish armoured platforms.
The strategic significance of this MoU goes beyond individual enhancements, as Spain, like many NATO countries, is increasing defense budgets and speeding up the modernization of its ground forces. By partnering with Rheinmetall, Indra enhances Spain’s domestic production and digitalization capabilities, which will strengthen national resilience and sovereignty in vehicle design and support. As Rheinmetall Landsysteme’s CEO Eduardo Veen said, “the partnership starts a strong alliance to support the efforts of the Spanish Armed Forces to modernize their fleet of combat vehicles”. In effect, the Rheinmetall and Indra alliance signals a new phase of European cooperation, pooling experience on C4I systems and armored vehicles to ensure Spain’s Leopard tanks and other armored units remain at the cutting edge of military technology.
