RBSL Develops Brimstone Module for Boxer

Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) have unveiled a rapid prototype design for a Brimstone Overwatch Mission Module. The concept demonstrator was developed alongside the Brimstone missile’s manufacturer MBDA. The Boxer module concept was worked-up in response to the UK’s close-combat anti-armor overwatch capability requirement.

The Mounted Close Combat Overwatch (MCCO) requirement calls for “a long-range system providing anti-armour coverage to the battle group, with concepts carrying multiple missiles weighing up to 50kg with a range of up to 10km or more.” A short video demonstrating the concept was shared on RBSL’s social media. It shows the vehicle mounted with an eight cell launcher module.

RBSL explain that the demonstrator was constructed in “only 10 weeks working closely with suppliers to go straight from CAD models into CNC manufacture” this reduced the project’s lead time and cost with 3D printing used to manufacture components alongside traditional fabrication methods. The video showcasing the Brimstone Overwatch Mission Module was filmed at RBSL’s factory in Telford, UK with the edges of one of the facilities test tracks providing the backdrop to the demonstration. The module is shown operating with a section of troops from the British Army’s Mercian Regiment and in conjunction with a small UAV providing a local reconnaissance asset.

The Boxer Overwatch Mission Module, if developed further, would “provide the tactical commander with the capability to deliver precision anti-armour effects at long ranges, with no modification to the Boxer Drive Module.” The concept is to provide tactical command capability to precision anti-armor weapons at longer engagement ranges. With the UK set to procure more than 600 Boxers over the vehicles service life the platform’s modularity makes it a compelling option for the Mounted Close Combat Overwatch requirement.

Other manufacturers have developed vehicles in response to the Mounted Close Combat Overwatch requirement with the Supacat Brimstone HMT Overwatch, which pairs Brimstone with a Supacat HMT 600, perhaps the best known.
