France and Italy Sign Massive Contract for Nearly 700 Aster Missiles

On 30 January, the Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) and Eurosam announced a large production contract for nearly 700 Aster family missiles at the request of the French and Italian militaries. With some 1,300 Aster missiles already produced, they are the cornerstone of these nation’s air defenses equipping the Horizon class destroyers, FREMM class frigates, Charles de Gaulle class carrier, Cavour class carrier, and the Thaon di Revel class OPVs. The missile also forms basis for the SAMP/T ground-based air defense system in use by both militaries. With the frequent bombardment of Ukraine by cruise and ballistic missiles the need for European missile defenses has become pressing. Both Italy and France have committed to supplying SAMP/T systems to Ukraine where they will see operational use for the first time.

First deployed in 2001, the Aster family includes the Aster 15 and Aster 30, with the main difference being a larger booster on the Aster 30 (680 lb. total vs. 990 lb.). With upgrades to the radar, warhead, and software, the Aster 30 evolved into the Block 1 and Block 1NT missiles capable of intercepting SRBMs and MRBMs respectively. The Block 1NT missile is the newest variant produced in response to more advanced MRBM threats such as China’s DF-21. It combines a new Ka-band seeker and advanced software to intercept these complex threats.

The already existing Aster fleet is undergoing a Mid-Life Update process to extend its service life with this beginning in 2021. While not initially involved in the missile’s development and production the UK is an export user of Aster 30, carrying them onboard the Type 45 class destroyers.

In 2022, the UK joined the multi-national partnership that includes France and Italy which is carrying out the Mid-Life Update process. Through this, the UK’s Aster 30s will be modified locally to Block 1 standard. The assembly work will take place at Gosport, in the UK. Once complete this will give the Type 45 class an anti-ballistic missile capability.
